Glymnocalycium
Gymnocalycium, commonly called chin cactus, is a genus of about 70 South American species of cactus. The genus name Gymnocalycium is a Greek word meaning, "naked calyx” and refers to the flower buds bearing no hair or spines. This genus of cacti is renowned for its diverse range, charming appearance, and relatively easy care.
Gymnocalycium species are typically globular or spherical in shape with prominent ribs and tubercles. They have a wide range of appearances with all types of spine. Some are short and stubby to long and needle-like. Some varieties will also even develop a woolly, fuzzy growth called a cephalium on top of their stems. These cacti produce stunning, trumpet-shaped flowers. The colours of the flowers also vary greatly, coming in colours including pink, red, yellow, and white.
Like most cacti, Gymnocalycium thrives in bright, indirect light. It’s best to water moderately during the growing season and allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Using a well-draining soil mix specifically formulated for succulents or cacti will help the plant dry out quick enough to prevent any rotting.
Each living plant is unique and may vary slightly in size, colour, or shape depending on the season. Flowering plants are sent when available.
